Personnel:
Steve Long - piano, organ, composition
Travis Bliss - tenor sax, clarinet, bass clarinet
Nick Neuburg - drums, percussion
VĪXĪ is an album by composer and pianist Steve Long exploring the boundaries between composition and improvisation. It draws on chant, microtonality, and the rhythmic complexity of spoken word for forms. Inspired by the symbolism and superstition surrounding the numbers 17, the music transforms cyclical structures and stylized melodies into shifting patterns where form and ornament continually blur. The album brings together experimental music, contemporary composition, and improvisation to explore repetition, transformation, and the tension between control and chance.

Dirge is an experimental viola project by New York musician Joanna Mattrey, combining extended techniques, preparations, electronics, and improvisation with influences from folk music, classical music, and the NYC noise scene. Moving between harsh noise and soaring melody, Mattrey uses memory as a compositional tool to create music that evokes forgotten traditions, ritual, and ceremony. The resulting work transforms chaos into fleeting moments of beauty and stillness, connecting experimental music and improvisation with the sounds and sensibilities of traditional folk music.

released August 1, 2024
eloquent vulgar is Steve Long and Kalli Mathios
blender collection is a work by poet Kalli Mathios, and composer and pianist Steve Long. It explores time and process, through experimental music and text. A poem is continually reshaped through dice-based procedures. Disjointed images, chance encounters, and physical gestures create a shifting palimpsest where meaning emerges between movement and stillness, restriction and freedom, past and present.

Steve Long - Pipe-organ
Code-Talker is a solo pipe organ album by composer and organist Steve Long, recorded live at St. Paul’s Chapel at Columbia University in New York City. Inspired by the linguistic Code-Talker paradox, the project explores language, communication, memory, and personal history through guided improvisation and musical fragments drawn from different periods of Long’s life. Blending experimental music, contemporary composition, and improvisation, the album unfolds like an encrypted message shaped by the pipe organ and the resonant acoustics of the chapel.

Dear Life Records
released February 10, 2023
Joanna Mattrey: Stroh Violin, Field Recordings
Steven Long: Organ, Stove, Barometer, Synth, Short-wave Radio
Strider is the first duo album by Joanna Mattrey and Steve Long. This ambient-experimental record combines concise melodic lines with improvisation, field recordings, electronics, and unconventional instruments. Recorded in upstate New York and Brooklyn, the duo incorporates sounds from the Hudson River, found objects, Stroh violin, a vintage organ, synthesizers, shortwave radio, and toy keyboards. Unlike traditional long-form ambient music, Strider presents a collection of short, static ambient songs, each built around a single musical character or sonic idea.
